What is happening at Brewood Bridge?
In December last year Brewood Bridge was closed after the road and bridge wall was extensively damaged. We are working with Staffordshire County Council on plans for a like‑for‑like repair to Brewood Bridge and the adjoining road. This means the bridge approach wall will be repaired to its original design and layout.
Why is a like‑for‑like repair being proposed?
A like‑for‑like repair allows the bridge to remain in keeping with the character of the area while ensuring it remains safe and functional.
Who is involved in the project?
The repair plan is being developed in close collaboration with Staffordshire County Council. We’ve also working with Severn Trent who have already repaired the water pipe which is located within the bridge structure. We will be repairing the bridge wall and reinstating the road surface.
When will work begin?
Whilst we don't have a date for when the works will start we are hoping the repairs will begin in several weeks.
Will there be any disruption during the works?
The road will remain closed throughout the repair works, and the current signed diversion route for the road and towpath will stay in place. We aim to keep any disruption to local people, boaters and businesses to a minimum.
Is the Shropshire Union Canal and towpath open?
The canal is open to boating but the towpath has been closed and diverted around the bridge.
Who is paying for this repair?
As a charity we have limited funds and resources. Whilst the investigation is still ongoing, we are having to use our emergency funds to pay for this repair. If anyone would like to help donate money to support our work please visit our donate pages.
Has any consideration been given to the proposed development at Hockerhill Farm, Kiddemore Green Road and the associated increase in traffic on the structural integrity and long-term safety of the bridge?
Our planning team was not consulted on the planning application, as the site lies beyond the distance at which we would normally be engaged as a statutory consultee. As such, we have not submitted a planning response and have not undertaken an assessment of the proposed development or its associated traffic impacts.
Will any consideration be given to the future impact of the future loading and traffic impacts this proposed development will bring?
We recognise that traffic volumes have increased over the lifetime of many of our bridges are likely to continue increasing as communities grow. However, the management of traffic levels, highway capacity, restrictions, or improvements is a matter for the local Highway authority and the local planning authority. Once repaired the weight load limit of the bridge will be reassessed.
How will local people be kept informed?
Further updates including dates, timelines, and details about the programme of works will be communicated via our website and via local community groups.
Are there opportunities for residents to ask questions or give feedback?
Yes, we are holding two public drop in sessions on the following dates:
-
Wednesday 18 March from 5pm to 7pm at Brewood Community Library, Newport Street South Staffordshire ST19 9DU
-
Wednesday 25 March from 5pm to 7pm at Bishops Wood Village Hall, Boscobel Lane, Bishops Wood, ST19 9FG
These sessions will give residents the opportunity to hear directly from the project team and understand the expected programme of works
What are the next steps for the project?
Once our plans are approved, the project will move into the construction phase. We will continue to work closely with Staffordshire County Council and Severn Trent to deliver the repairs as swiftly and safely as possible, while minimising disruption to the community. We hope to start work in the next few weeks.**
