The charity making life better by water

West Midlands region, the calm away from the concrete

West Midlands

Across the West Midlands 520 miles of canals weave through richly vibrant and culturally diverse communities.

In 2021 we showcased our canals in Coventry as part of Coventry 2021 UK City of Culture, and last year we were proud our canals played a key part in showcasing the region as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Just over half of Birmingham's population is within walking distance of their local canal, and we hosted thousands across the city's waterways during the summer.

We have ‘More Canals Than Venice!' in Birmingham and we're incredibly proud to see them featured in the Opening Ceremony, part of the design of the medal and playing host to multiple locations for the Queen's Baton Relay.

We're currently delivering a £1.7 million project to improve natural habitats along our canals in the West Midlands as part of the Green Recovery Challenge Fund.

Once at the heart of the industrial revolution, a place of trade, today they are at the core of our national waterways network and play a central role in helping you live a happier, healthier life.
