Your waterways - at the heart of your community

Earlier this year we launched a new scheme to support local groups keen to work with us to make more of their local waterway.

Volunteer rangers on the Chesterfield Canal

We're already supported five projects making improvements to their local waterways. These are:

Turnerwood residents' group

Environmental enhancements and towpath improvements around Turnerwood basin, part of the Chesterfield Canal.

Kinoulton Parish Council

Installation of a new bench along the Grantham Canal.

Clarborough & Welham Parish Council

Installation of a new bench overlooking the Chesterfield Canal.

Rampton Parish Council

Installation of a new bench and noticeboard for visitors to the River Trent

Saxilby Parish Council

Contribution towards a new bench overlooking the Fossdyke Canal from the Bridge Street conservation area and wildlife enhancements.

Submit your ideas

The scheme will re-open for applications later this year. If your community group is keen to get more involved with your local canal, river or reservoir, you can submit your ideas for an initial project – and we will support you.

In return, your group will agree to take on volunteering activities to help look after your local waterway. This could be linked to the initial project or another opportunity such as volunteer rangers or a community adoption. Our volunteering pages provide more information on how you can get involved.

What sort of projects will we consider?

Your application could include:

  • improving local facilities, such as: a new bench along the towpath, a new noticeboard or interpretation panel, or re-surfacing a section of towpath
  • providing a waterway taster session for a group / community members (eg. guided walks, canoeing, boat trip, cycling or angling)

Don’t be limited by these suggestions – we want to hear your new ideas!

You can read the terms and conditions here.

If you would like further information on the scheme, or to express your interest in making an application please email with your query and contact details and we will get back in touch.
