The charity making life better by water

Meet Harriet & Holly on the Kennet & Avon Canal

Friends exploring the kennet & Avon Canal

We're very old friends of about forty, or fifty years or so. Well, because it's so long ago, we can't actually remember when we first met, or even how we met. But we do remember we met in London through friends of friends, and that gradually the group of friends grew bigger and bigger. I think our husbands might have shared a flat together at that time. I do know that we were badly behaved. Well, it was the 1960s and most people were badly behaved then.

Holly says she's, possibly, still badly behaved. After all nobody knows how long we're all here for, and you've got to get on with it and keep smiling she says.

Towpaths are wonderful for walking

Friends walking along the canal

I live just up the road in Marshfield and Holly lives in the northern part of Hampshire, south of Guildford. When we arranged to meet up we decided to come here because it's a lovely place to go and it's very peaceful. We were just saying to each other how lovely and quiet it is here in this area. Towpaths are always wonderful to walk along and there's all the wildlife and birds for everyone to see and enjoy.

We come here to this part of the Kennet & Avon Canal quite a lot. I like walking along the canal, but my husband is disabled so he finds it difficult to join me. I've got that sorted, though - I just leave him in the pub and he's happy there until I join him in the pub after my walk.

Anyway, we'd better be off now because we're going to a quiz this evening, so we've got to get back in time to polish our brains.
