Attercliffe Moorings on Sheffield & Tinsley Canal will host the first family-friendly Sheffield & Tinsley Canal Community Day on Saturday, September 16, from 10am until 4pm.
About the event
The event continues the legacy of the successful Sheffield Waterfront Festivals, held in previous years.
Canoe taster sessions, interactive drama walks, circus skills, drumming workshops and bhangra dancing are among the wide range of activities that will be free to enjoy, thanks to funding raised by players of the People's Postcode Lottery as part of the Trust's community roots programme.
Visitors will also have the chance to join a litter pick along the canal, in support of the charity's ‘Big Plastic Pick-Up'. With 14 million pieces of plastic rubbish ending up in and around our canals and rivers each year, people can make a difference, keep canals alive and take action to end plastic pollution by helping stop plastic becoming part of our nature.
Celebrating the beautiful Sheffield & Tinsley Canal
Kerri O'Connor, community roots engagement coordinator at the Canal & River Trust, said: “This will be a day to celebrate the beautiful Sheffield & Tinsley Canal, shining a light on this relatively undiscovered part of the city.
“There are so many people we speak to who don't realise the canal is on their doorstep and there for them to enjoy. There are sections of the canal which are absolutely stunning, and Attercliffe Moorings is one area we are really hoping to raise the profile of.
“Despite the moorings being close to urban life and public transport, visitors often say it feels like they are transported away into the countryside.”
