The charity making life better by water

Nottingham canal-side set to come alive in celebration of Black History Month

You are invited to celebrate Nottingham’s black heritage by the canal side as we join Binks Yard to host a special event to mark Black History Month.

The celebrations are taking place at Binks Yard, by the Nottingham & Beeston Canal, between 12pm and 7pm on Sunday 13 October.

The event

The event, being supported by Browne Jacobson, will give people the chance to get on the water in one of our Canadian canoes, enjoy a trip on board a Megan & Tinks narrowboat, and join a black community cultural heritage walk from Market Square to the canal-side.

On dry land there will be live music, DJ sets, community choirs, dancers, an XTREME Hip Hop session as well as authentic Caribbean food served up by Chefs Hut. A History Zone will give the chance to learn more about the city’s black heritage and our stall will enable people to find out more about how the charity cares for the city’s waterways. There will also be the opportunity to find out more about our ‘Swim Sista Swim’ programme which gives non-swimming black women in the city access to swimming sessions to build their confidence in and around water.

Reclaiming Narratives

Carol Burrell, our community wellbeing coordinator, said: “This is the third year that we’ve celebrated Black History Month by the canal-side at Binks Yard and it always proves to be a really popular event.

“This year’s Black History Month theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ and this event will be a great opportunity to celebrate Nottingham’s rich black heritage and bring the community together in a beautiful waterside setting. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing paddle or narrowboat ride, want to get up and dance to some great live music, or enjoy some tasty authentic food, we’ll have it all.”
