The work is being done will involve replacing the four multi-tonne lock gates that enable boats to travel up and down the canal.
The project is expected to take around eight weeks to complete, with new handmade gates made to fit the historic lock, which dates back to the opening of the canal in 1827.
Mark Evans, waterway manager at the Canal & River Trust, said: “The Bridgwater & Taunton Canal is a beautiful waterway and a great example of the area's industrial heritage which requires constant care and attention. These works are crucial to keeping the waterway alive and working and will make a big difference for boaters and other visitors who use and enjoy the canal.”
