The lift which is still in use has two huge water tanks (caissons), each with watertight sealable doors to carry boats up and down.
Anderton Boat Lift is now a visitor attraction surrounded by well maintained grounds and a visitor centre on the bank of the River Weaver Navigation.
The site is overlooked by the ICI chemical works, a gritty backdrop which is illuminated at night.
