The Kennet & Avon Canal flows through the medieval town of Devizes. The town has a strong sense of connection to its history.
The town’s canal heritage is most apparent at Devizes Wharf, where you can see colourful narrowboats moored. You can also visit the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust Museum for a vivid insight into the canal’s past. Devizes is full of listed buildings, including several Norman churches, and the weekly market can be traced back to 1609.
Just outside the town is the famous Caen Hill Lock Flight, one of the most striking on the canal network. It is an easy walk along the towpath from the Wharf to the locks, with beautiful views of the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.
