The charity making life better by water

A rural canal scene, with a towpath on the left lined by vegetation on the bank and thick trees, and a farmer's field on the offside.

Drakeholes

The idyllic Drakeholes sits on the Chesterfield Canal and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning it's a protected area relax in nature and spot wildlife. It's also part of the canal that has also been awarded a prestigious Green Flag award, judged to be among the best green spaces in the UK.

The Chesterfield Canal was built to transport coal, limestone, and lead. Explore the local history with a walk to Wiseton to see the Grade II listed Lady’s Bridge. Stroll to the entrance of Drakeholes Tunnel where the towpath stops. Before boats had engines, they had to be ‘legged’ through the tunnel.
