Find your happy place by water 2023

Happy place by water

Spending time by your local canal can give your mood a boost, so why not find your #HappyPlaceByWater?

Whether you're paddling on the water, jogging along the towpath, cruising the cut, cycling to work, or just looking for a place to relax with friends, doing it next to our waterways can make you healthier and happier.

We have over 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in our network, so chances are you're not far away from your next wellbeing boost.

Find your Happy Place By Water

Why is it good to spend time by water?

Our canals and rivers give us all somewhere we can live, relax, get active, spend time together and get close to nature. From maintaining habitats to preserving heritage, our work keeps these important spaces open and accessible so that millions of us can live healthier lives.

We're thrilled (albeit not all that surprised) that science is backing up what we've always believed to be true - that spending time by water is good for your mental health.

Recently, a first-of-its-kind study revealed that participants associated an increase in mental wellbeing for up to 24 hours when visiting our waterways, which was stronger compared to time spent at outside green spaces, such as parks and fields.

But don't just take our word for it. Hear from some of our celebrity supporters and ambassadors who have already found their #HappyPlaceByWater.
