Getting around: active travel routes

You can continue to use our towpaths as free and accessible routes across the West Midlands.

Two adults with their arms around each other as they walk along a canal lock in Birmingham.

Our iconic canals within Birmingham City transported thousands of visitors around the vibrant Commonwealth Games hub and other venues.

You can still use their towpaths as green alternatives to other modes of transport.

Remember to share the space

All towpaths along these routes have been recently refurbished and are popular routes with local walkers and cyclists. They offer greener, more relaxing routes with plenty of historic sights and nature to spot along the way.

Please remember towpaths can be narrow in places. Always share the space and, if you're cycling, #StayKindSlowDown.

Other green ways to travel

West Midlands Cycle Hire is available across the West Midlands. Bikes are available 24/7, with docking stations at major bus, metro and train stations, visitor attractions and city or town centres.

We're proud to have worked with The West Midlands Combined Authority and The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to provide active and sustainable travel during the summer of the Commonwealth Games.
