The charity making life better by water

Valuing our waterways

At the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Waterways in November 2022, we launched a headline report setting out the economic and social value of our 250-year-old waterway network.

We announced that the combined annual economic and social value of the waterways amounts to £6.1bn. This includes £1.5bn annual economic value from water-based tourism and jobs, and annual social value of £4.6bn, which includes £1.1bn cost-saving to the NHS from active use of the waterways and the towpaths.

To quantify the benefits, we have worked with social-value experts, Simetrica-Jacobs, with all methodology aligning with 2022 HM Treasury Green Book valuation techniques.
