Your walk starts in Gannow Tunnel which was dug through the hill so that boats could travel in and out of Burnley. From here, walk along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal towpath to Burnley Wharf. 200 years ago this wharf would have been busy with working narowboats laden with cotton and coal. There were many cotton mills in the area and Burnley Wharf housed a number of warehouses.
After Finsley Gate you'll reach the 'Straight Mile'. Burnley embankment was built in 1801, an amazing 18 metres above the town. Pick a comfortable spot and enjoy the view.
Continue along the towpath, past the Yorkshire Street Aqueduct and Thompson Park which is a wonderful spot for wildlife. A little further and you'll arrive at Bank Hall Colliery. Take a moment to pause and feel better by water before retracing your steps to Gannow Tunnel.
