We are pleased to confirm the re-lining works at Lune Embankments will be completed this week.  The navigation will re-open to boats at 8am on Friday 22nd May and the towpath will also be re-opened at the same time.

Please continue to follow the government advice regarding coronavirus – stay alert, control the virus, save lives.

Following completion of piling work, the towpath has now re-opened between bridge 108 Halton Road and the steps at the south east end of Lune Aqueduct, allowing pedestrian access again over the River Lune on the Lune Aqueduct.  Please note cyclist and disabled access will not be possible as the route is via a flight of steps.

The towpath between Lune Aqueduct and Lansil Footbridge will remain closed until completion of the re-lining works.

Our work at Lune Embankments is considered safety critical and will continue during the current COVID-19 emergency.  It is expected to be completed by the published date of 22 May.

Please remember our advice - only move your boat if it’s essential (not for leisure purposes) and minimise your use of the towpath.

If you are not currently occupying your boat, the government guidance is that you must not visit it (this means no short trips or breaks on your boat at this time).

Please follow the government advice – stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.

Following the recent storms, an unprecedented amount of rain has led to severe difficulties in maintaining a dry, safe working environment for laying the geotextile liner. This has resulted in a further delay to the works to repair the Lune Embankments.

Our contractors will continue to work 7 days a week in order to complete the repairs as soon as possible, subject to weather conditions however the stoppage will need to be extended until 22 May 2020.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this change of programme and for the inconvenience it may cause.

Our contractors working on repairs of the Lune Embankments have found substantial areas of soft ground and difficulties in controlling ground water on site.

This has resulted in the need to change the working method and will have a significant impact on our programme of works.  Our contractors are working as hard as they can, seven days a week, in order to complete the repairs as soon as possible.  However, we do need to extend the stoppage until 9th April in order to safely complete the project.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this change of programme and for the inconvenience it may cause.

Work has commenced on the Lune Embankment in order to resolve leakage from the canal.  This will include de-watering the length and re-lining 300m of channel between Lune and Bulk Road Aqueducts.

The towpath will remain open for the majority of the works.  However, to ensure the safety of our customers whilst equipment is being installed on site, the towpath will be closed daily between 9am and 4pm for the next three to four weeks.  Local diversions will be in place.

The towpath will only be closed where the work is taking place each day and will be re-opened when safe to do so.   Please be advised by the on-site team and take note of any signage.
