From Holme Bridge Lock, Gargrave (Lock 30) through to Wigan (Lock 85)

We are pleased to advise reservoir holdings have improved on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. All restrictions placed on the lock flights between Wigan to Gargrave will be removed as of Friday 21 December 2018.

We thank you for your patience during this time.

Further to the listed flight restrictions below, we will be opening the Wigan Flight to navigation on Thursdays only. The time restrictions will remain in place and they are as follows;

•           8.30am – 10am to facilitate entry on to the flight

•           12.30pm – 2pm to allow exit off the flight

Please note bookings are not required for the flight, however, assistance on the Wigan flight will still be available to single handed boaters or those of a crew of two people but one cannot assist with lock work for health reasons. This can be booked by calling 03030 404040 and asking to speak with the North-West office. This service available on Thursdays and is subject to availability.

Johnson's Hillock and Blackburn Locks will remain open with no restrictions, however, movement will be monitored and this decision is subject to change. We kindly request customers check all gates and paddles are closed after use and to share locks where possible.

The Saturday opening times are as follows.

The Gargrave flight (Lock 30 Holme Bridge to Lock 35 Stegneck Lock)  open Saturdays  9am to 3pm, last passage at 2pm

Bank Newton flight (Lock 36 to Lock 41) open Saturdays between 9am to 3pm, last passage at 2pm

Greenberfield flight (Lock 42 to Lock 44) open Saturdays between 9am to 3pm, last passage at 2pm

Barrowford flight (Lock 45 to Lock 51) open Saturdays between 9am to 3pm, last passage at 2pm

No booking of locks is required, but please can customers check all gates and paddles are closed after use and to share locks where possible.

Following a further period of below average rainfall, the water resource situation on the Leeds Liverpool Canal is such that we will need to close the canal from Holme Bridge lock, Gargrave (Lock 30) through to Wigan (Lock 85) on the 26th November until the New Year. This action is necessary because of the limited water resources currently available but more importantly to reduce the risk of the reservoirs not refilling in time for the start of the main boating season next year. During this closure we intend to offer windows of opportunity for boats to move and so the navigation will be reopened each Saturday and if the demand exists additional days can be considered.
