The charity making life better by water

Volunteers help clean up Hemel Hempstead Canal

Twenty four volunteers from Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association joined forces with us to spruce up a stretch of the Grand Union Canal in Hemel Hempstead, on the 23 April.

The volunteers, armed with paint brushes, gardening trowels, dibbers, hoes and hand forks, repainted both Apsely Top Lock and Apsley Lock (Lock numbers 65 and 66) and replanted the water-side flower beds with summer plants and bulbs.

In better shape

Miriam Tedder, our volunteer leader, said: “The volunteers have done a really great job helping to look after the canal and I'd like to thank them for their efforts. The canal now looks much tidier and I hope that this will encourage local people to pop down to the waterway this summer and spend some time exploring everything it has to offer.”

Emma Crump, from Hightown, said: “We wanted to give something back to the community by helping other local charities and organisations. We really enjoyed getting stuck in to improve an area used by local people including our residents and staff. The canal definitely looked in better shape by the end of the morning, and it was really pleasing to get some nice comments about our efforts from passing boaters and walkers.”
