Over £100,000 is being invested to replace four lock gates at Tednambury. A boat and crane are being used to winch the multi-tonne oak gates from the water before they are driven to the West Midlands, where they will be refurbished before being returned and re-installed. The project is expected to take five weeks.
The work is part of our five-month winter maintenance programme to repair and restore canals and rivers across the country.
Very popular river
Graham Smith, Canal & River Trust supervisor, says: “The lock gates have been in situ for over 20 years and need to be refurbished to prolong their life. We're craning them out and sending them up to our workshop in the west Midlands to be restored. We'll then crane them back in, well ahead of the busier period for boats in the spring. The Stort is a beautiful and very popular river, but it does take some looking after, and this is just one example of the type of work we have to do to.”
