The news was announced at People's Postcode Lottery's annual Charity Gala held recently in Edinburgh. Additional funding for supported charities was announced at the Gala, including the extra award to the Canal & River Trust. Dame Kelly Holmes joined 300 guests, including the Trust's chief executive Richard Parry, to celebrate the impact that players of People's Postcode Lottery have on charities and good causes.
Players of People's Postcode Lottery have now awarded an amazing £58.6 million to charities and good causes since the lottery's launch in 2008. The support has made a massive difference to hundreds of communities with funding awarded to numerous grass route groups and local projects as well as national and international charities.
A huge boost
To date, players of People's Postcode Lottery support to the Canal & River Trust has helped to fund a number of initiatives including a national hedgerow restoration programme, the refurbishment of Postles Roving Bridge on the Llangollen Canal, funding for the repair of narrowboat Ferret at the National Waterways Museum and the restoration of the Guillotine Lock on the North Stratford Canal.
Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, comments: “It's fantastic that the players of the People's Postcode Lottery are supporting the canals in this way. Their valuable contribution and support is helping to transform places for both people and nature, making the waterways more attractive for boaters, towpath visitors and wildlife. We have a huge array of projects that we'd like to do in the future, and this funding will be a huge boost helping us to deliver some of them.”
