The festival will be the first held in the town. Festivities start on Friday 11 September and will include live music, a boat parade, fun fair, craft stalls and a beer festival at the historic Waterside Inn.
The weekend coincides with Leigh Heritage Weekend and visitors can enjoy a fascinating range of activities away from the canal including a guided tour of the Town Hall and Parish Church, Leigh Film Festival and the first public opening of the engine room at Spinners Mill.
Boat trips will run along the canal for visitors and we hope dozens of boaters will bring their colourful painted boats to moor in the town centre and join in the festivities.
Fantastic weekend of celebrations
Chantelle Seaborn, waterway manager with the Canal & River Trust, said: “Leigh Canal Festival promises to be a fantastic weekend of celebrations. We have recently launched a major regeneration project here and we hope a new canal festival will add to the buzz and sense of excitement centred on the waterfront.
“Town centre visitor moorings are available over the weekend for up to 40 boats. As demand for the best spots is likely to be high, we are asking boaters to book their berth in advance with the Trust's customer service staff in the Wigan office.”
