The charity making life better by water

Local company helps us care for Birmingham Canal

24 employees from national food services company Aramark have been busy helping us care for the Birmingham Canal Navigations which is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

As part of their annual Aramark Building Community Day the volunteers spent the day on the canal in the Ladywood area cutting back and tidying up overgrown vegetation along the towpath and at access points. They also helped remove any litter and plastics from the towpath ensuring that the canal is a tidy, welcoming place for local people and visitors.

Terry Hodgetts, business and corporate engagement manager, said: “Aramark did a fantastic job helping us tidy up this stretch of the canal in Birmingham and it's amazing how much you can achieve in just one day

“Research shows being next to water makes you feel happier and healthier so if you're wanting to escape the office and spend the day helping us to look after your local canal then please get in touch. We provide all the equipment, so you can have a fun day out in the fresh air whilst making a difference to the local community.”

Jane Cookson, from Aramark, said: “Everyone really enjoyed the activity, and all got a real sense of achievement from the work we did with the Canal & River Trust. The day was very well organised, and everyone commented that not only did they get a buzz from the teamwork, they enjoyed a day away from the office and the daily grind. We hope the local residents enjoy the canal's beautiful green spaces for many years to come.”
