We're working in partnership with Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and integrated transport coordinator, Centro, to improve and provide traffic free routes, which are suitable for walkers, cyclists and boaters, across the West Midlands.
The first phase of the project has involved resurfacing and widening more than a mile of towpath along the Stourbridge Town Arm Canal from the Bonded Warehouse to Wordsley Junction. Access to and from the canal has also been improved making it easier for everyone to discover their local stretch of waterways.
Further phases of the two year project will include resurfacing the Stourbridge Canal towpath from Wordsley Canal Junction to Leys Junction and along the Fens Pool Branch. The final phase will improve the towpath between Leys Junction (near Leys Road) and Seven Dwellings, near Delph Road in Brierley Hill.
Enjoy the canal throughout the year
Richard Preston, from the Canal & River Trust, said: “This new all-weather towpath along the Stourbridge Canal will create just under five miles of pothole and traffic-free towpath which is suitable for everyone to enjoy.
“Having easy access to the waterways really does make a difference to people's lives and we want everyone to be able enjoy the canal throughout the year as a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the town.”
As well as in the Dudley Borough, towpath improvements are also taking place in Wolverhampton, Walsall and Sandwell authority areas.
