We're organising this free event in partnership with Burton Mutual Angling Association.
Taking place on Saturday 26 September from Hillfield Playing Fields, the day is aimed at getting people of all ages and abilities out onto the town's canal to have a go at one of the nation's best loved pastimes. There will be coaching sessions for juniors and their families to help introduce beginners as well as enabling existing anglers to hone their skills.
No experience is necessary
In the afternoon there will be a family match with youngsters pairing up to try their hands at catching the largest weight of fish. No previous fishing experience is necessary and tackle will be provided for those who don't have their own. All youngsters trying fishing for the first time – and who register in advance - will go home with a free annual membership to Burton Mutual Angling Association and an angling starter kit.
Brian Hull from the Canal & River Trust's Central Shires Waterway Partnership said; “The Trent & Mersey Canal running through Burton is a great place for fishing. It's quiet, easily accessible and packed with fish so it's fantastic for novices and experienced anglers alike.
“The canal is just a wonderful place to spend time, full of wildlife and interesting historical features. We want lots of local families to join us for the day to get a taste of just how enjoyable fishing on our wonderful waterways can be.”
The event will take place from Hillfield Playing Fields, Hillfield Lane, Stretton DE13 0BL with facilities generously provided by Stretton Parish Council. The coaching sessions will take place between 10:30 and 13:00 with the family fun pairs match held between 13:30 and 15:30.
Booking for both sessions is recommended as places are limited. Spaces can be booked by calling 07891 126 910. All under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
