Free boating sessions on offer in April

On Sunday 19 April Drifters Waterway Holidays is offering people the chance to try canal boating for free at 21 of its narrowboat hire bases across England and Wales.

The taster sessions will include boat tours, holiday discounts and free trips on skippered boats.

Full details of what each site is offering can be found at www.drifters.co.uk/openday and no booking is required.

Tim Parker, chairman of Drifters Waterway Holidays, explains: “Britain's beautiful 2,000-mile canal and river network is a haven for wildlife and travelling at just 4mph, canal boat holidays are often described as ‘the fastest way to slow down'.

“Over 370,000 people go canal boating each year and we hope our free taster sessions will introduce many more people to the joys of a holiday afloat on our wonderful inland waterways.”

Lifelong passion

Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, added: “For many people, a boating holiday is the start of a lifelong passion, with thousands of people first inspired by family holidays afloat. I am sure the Drifters' boating taster sessions will enthuse a whole new wave of canal and river enthusiasts.”

Drifters offers over 500 boats for hire, operating from 38 bases across England, Scotland and Wales. All its operators provide hirers with boat steering tuition as part of their hire fee. 2015 prices start at £368 for a short break (three or four nights) on a boat for four, weekly breaks from £480.
