The charity making life better by water

Drifters' National open day engages hundreds of newcomers

Over 1,000 people enjoyed a free canal boat trip on Sunday 19 April 2015 as part of Drifters National open day.

The event, which we supported, offered newcomers to canal boating taster sessions at 21 bases across England and Wales.

Nigel Stevens, Director of Drifters Waterway Holidays, says:

“We are delighted with the response to our open day events this year, with over 1,000 people attending 21 events across England and Wales.

“With more events on offer than ever before and bright spring weather enjoyed by much of the country, it has been our most popular open day so far. Our events at Tardebigge on the Worcester & Birmingham and Great Haywood on the Shropshire Union Canal were particularly successful, with over 150 people enjoying a free trip on skippered boats at each location.

“We are also very pleased with the fantastic response on social media to the images we commissioned to promote the open days, showing canal boats in surprising places – the London Underground and Picadilly Circus.

“It's absolutely vital that we attract newcomers to the canals, and canal boat holidays can often be the start of a lifelong passion for the waterways. We hope many of our visitors over the weekend will return to the waterways soon!”
