The charity making life better by water

Dozens of Santas make a splash on Leeds & Liverpool Canal

The Christmas season kicked off in style in Bootle last weekend (Saturday 1st December) with more than 93 Santas taking to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal for a festive paddle.

Santa Splash 2017

We organised the Santa Splash with the Desmond Family Canoe Trail project, to give youngsters and adults the chance to get out on the water and have a go at canoeing.

Dressed up in Santa suits and in boats adorned with tinsel and baubles, they made their way along the canal from Eldonian Village, covering around 3km to finish at the Lock & Quay pub for free refreshments and entertainment.

Beth Cropper, project leader for the Desmond Family Canoe Trail, said: “We're delighted that so many people chose to come out on a chilly winter morning to enjoy some gentle exercise on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

“Everyone had a fantastic time in the canoes and it was an amazing sight to see all those Santas paddling along the canal.

“We hope that the people of Bootle will be inspired to continue to get out by their local canal throughout the winter – a short walk, bike ride or a spot of angling can really boost your wellbeing during the colder, darker months.”
