Tony Hales, chair of the Canal & River Trust

As one of the largest charities in the UK, with a turnover of around £180 million, we have exciting opportunities to attract new investment and establish new sources of voluntary funding. We have in our care the nation's third largest collection of listed heritage structures, as well as museums, archives, and hundreds of important wildlife sites. As a new charity, we are giving the public a greater say than ever in the running of their local canal or river.

We are seeking to appoint a financially qualified Trustee to join the main board, chair the Audit Committee and join the Investment Committee. The successful candidate will bring significant corporate finance experience, along with Board or Senior Management level experience in an organisation of similar scale and complexity. With an empathy with the natural and built heritage of the inland waterways, he or she will play a key role in developing the vision and strategy of our important organisation.

Tony Hales, chair of the Canal & River Trust, said: “This is an exciting time to join the Canal & River Trust, in its first year as a vibrant new charity. Waterways connect communities, bring wildlife into town centres and provide a way for us to get in touch with our heritage. Our canals and rivers are enjoyed by boaters, walkers, cyclists and anglers, young and old alike, and it is our passion to look after them for future generations. We are seeking an exceptional Trustee who is as enthusiastic about the waterways as we are and who can play a vital part in ensuring they continue to flourish.”

The role is being advertised on the Sunday Times online and exec-appointments.com. The deadline for applications is noon on Monday 4 February 2013.

The role is a three year appointment to which the candidate will devote approximately three days a month. The post is a volunteer role and will not be remunerated but proper travel and other expenses will be fully reimbursed.

We actively encourage diversity in all areas of our organisation to fully reflect the communities around the waterways, their geographic coverage in England and Wales, and to meet the Davies Report's recommended target relating to the gender balance of boards.
