Angling clubs invited to nominate venues for 2016 Canal Pairs Championship

Angling clubs across the country are being invited to nominate their local stretch of canal as a possible venue for the 2016 Canal Pairs Championship.

With the regional heats of this year's inaugural Championship proving very popular, and a star-studded final coming to the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal on October 24th, plans are now being made for the 2016 event.

The competition, organised by the Canal & River Trust and Angling Trust, will again see eleven regional qualifying heats across England as well as the possibility of additional heats in Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

In order to host a qualifying heat a venue must have:

  • Availability of 100 pegs split into two sections of 50 (neighbouring clubs can submit joint bids).
  • A match headquarters that can be used pre and post-match for food and refreshments.
  • Good car parking and towpath access.
  • A non-fishing event organiser and four teams of weigh-in stewards.

Qualifiers may be held on either a Saturday or Sunday between July 2nd and October 9th with the final being held on Saturday 29th October 2016.

John Ellis national fisheries and angling manager for the Canal & River Trust said; “This year's championship has been a great success and generated plenty of interest amongst match anglers.

“We want to build on that with a bigger, better event in 2016 and we'd like to hear from clubs that want to play a part and put their local stretch in the spotlight.

“Hopefully we'll get lots of nominations and be able to put together a really varied, competitive programme of qualifiers helping to establish the event as one of the most anticipated fixtures on the match calendar.”

David Kent, National Chair of Competitions at the Angling Trust, said; “I think we can all be pretty satisfied with the way the inaugural year has gone but there is more we want to do.

“The format generally will not change. However it was always the plan to invite the Canal & River Trust's angling club customers to put forward their local stretches of canal for 2016. Provided they meet all the criteria we could well see some really good new venues on the list.

“The qualifiers provide a great opportunity for local anglers to fish alongside some of the country's finest so I feel sure the event will see even greater support.”

The closing date for applications is 30th September 2015. Clubs can download the short application form and return by email to [email protected]. Successful applicants will be notified towards the end of October.
