Erewash canoe trail: Langley Mill to Ilkeston
Enjoy this short paddle through some very varied scenery, ending near the Gallows Inn in Ilkeston.
Distance: 5 Miles
Start: Great Northern Basin, Langley Mill, NG16 4AA
Enter the water just past the bridge where there is a KFC. As you leave the basin heading towards Ilkeston the industrial buildings will give way to sweeping views across the countryside.
At the first two locks that you meet it is easiest to portage on the towpath side, cross the bridge and then put your boat back in on the other side of the canal.
Once you reach playing fields and houses you’re on the outskirts of Ilkeston, although there will still be plenty of green spaces along your way. On your left you will be able to see Bennerley Viaducts, a Grade II listed structure, which is currently being converted into a cycling route.
Shortly after the viaduct you’ll have two more locks to portage around and then you’ll enjoy a lock-free stretch of canal, skirting around Ilkeston. After another two locks you’ll enter the most built up part of this route before arriving at the Gallows Inn and Gallows Inn Lock.
The end point of your paddle is just a short distance further at Gallows Inn playing fields.
End: Gallows Inn Fields, Nottingham Road, Ilkeston, DE7 5BB
