We have to manage the vegetation on the offside of our waterways (the opposite side to the towpath) to make sure boats can travel without obstruction and can see clearly ahead. It’s a huge task and in 2014/15 we spent £1.4 million on it.
The locations are determined through customer comments, our own engineers and known pinch points or navigable hazards.
When we’re cutting back offiside vegetation we use a chipper on the back of a boat. It shreds the vegetation that we cut back and then spreads it back onto the bank where it can mulch down and become an attractive habitat for a number of different species.
