Bruce Boats

Accessible boating in the heart of the Wiltshire and Berkshire Downs.

Bruce Boats, part of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, hires specially designed and built wide-beam canal boats to families and groups of people with members who are mobility impaired or have any other restriction on their health and activity, or are vulnerable and disadvantaged in any way.

Passenger accommodation ranges from 8-12 people depending on which boat is hired.

We are led by a team of highly professional volunteers and have welcomed over 25,000 guests in our 30+ years of successful operation.

We also provide crewed day trips for care homes, day-centres and other groups supporting the vulnerable and elderly.

In contrast we also offer a traditional narrow boat for hire to youth and community groups.

Disability Access Information

Bruce Boats has its own wharf close to Great Bedwyn railway station. Cars and coaches can park very close to the boats and parking is free for the duration of your hire.

Each wide-beam boat has lifts or ramps both for and aft to enable full access to the inside and the outside of the cabin. The easy-access domestic galley includes a full size cooker, hob, and refrigerator. Adjacent to the berths is a fully accessible shower and toilet.

Some boats have hospital beds and all boats have easy access to a wide seating area at the front of the boat. The saloon areas are spacious and designed for wheelchair users. We combine the traditional feel of a canal boat with modern conveniences - and heating!

On request we can provide hoists, toilet lift seats and other useful items.

We are proud of our boats and offer excellent training courses whether you are new to canal boating or are experienced boaters. We ensure you are trained and confident to enjoy your time on the canal. Our day trips are fully crewed by our own well trained volunteers.
