Rochdale Canal SSSI
This section of the Rochdale Canal is approximately 20 km in length, and supports an interesting array of aquatic plants. Of particular importance is the large population of floating water-plantain. Other species include alternate-leaved water milfoil, many species of pondweed, water violet, and American pondweed. The site also supports and a rich invertebrate assemblage including water beetles, dragonfly and damselflies. The Canal has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation due to the presence of floating Water Plantain.
