Following the draining of the canal we were able to identify the problem site.

We found that along the line of the leakage there was a historic masonry structure which was uncharted. We cannot say if this was a formal culvert that had collapsed or a rubble drain, but it was almost entirely blocked. Water got into this when it was hit by the piles being driven for the project, allowing it to run along the structure, under the road and into the adjacent property.

Following the investigation, we have completely removed the structure where it crosses the excavation and have reinstated with puddle clay and, following a period of monitoring, have been able to reopen the canal.

The towpath closure between Bridge 19 and Strines Aqueduct will remain in place for a further 3 - 4 weeks.

We thank you for your patience while we have been dealing with this.

Further to yesterday's update we wanted to give a little more information about the change to this stoppage date.

Unfortunately the works have taken longer to plan and the date originally planned was not an adequate amount of time given for specialist contractors along with Trust staff to be able to start the works due to the seasonal time.

The stop planks originally sourced were not suitable for a long term fix either and we have had to obtain new ones for this too.

We apologise for the late change of date and any inconvenience that this has caused.

The stoppage at bridge 19 is now going to start on the 20th April, a week later than originally planned.

We apologise for any inconvenience

Following on from yesterday's stoppage we wanted to update everyone about the canal.

A leak occurred in the area of Barlow Wood embankment, about a quarter of a mile from Marple Junction.

We've been able to complete a temporary repair, but now need to plan for and carry out a more detailed investigation and repair at the site. We don't want to delay that unduly but are happy to wait until after Easter for this work to be done having stepped up our monitoring of the area.

With this in mind we are planning to close the canal in the area of Bridge 19 (Barlow Wood Embankment) for a period of a week, commencing Monday 13th April. The canal will be drained for this work to be done.
