We are pleased to advise the works to repair Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal are now complete, and navigation has resumed.

Please be advised our specialist contractors will be onsite at Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal to carry out a full repair to the bridge between Tuesday 7 November and Monday 13 November, navigation will be closed throughout the duration of the works.

The planned works involve removing the old bearings and hydraulic cylinder, the cylinder will then be taken our specialist contractors workshop for overhaul which is estimated to take three days to complete.

Whilst the hydraulics are being repaired the hydraulic hoses will be replaced along with the installation of new bearings.

Once the cylinder is repaired and installed, our specialist contractors will undertake comprehensive tests of the bridge with navigation resuming Tuesday 14 November.

Following the temporary repair and a successful assisted passage yesterday, navigation has resumed at Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal.

Our contractors will be carrying out weekly inspections of the bridge to check for any wear to the temporary bearing castings. If they do notice any deterioration to the temporary parts, we will close navigation and refer back to our planned assisted weekly passages on Thursdays throughout September and until we are able to install the permanent replacement parts.

The full repair will require a week's closure. Notice will be provided on this closure when we have a date for these works.

Please be advised, tomorrows scheduled passage, Thursday 7 September, through Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal will now be taking place at 1pm instead of the previously advised time of 10am.

We would remind all customers wishing to pass through the bridge to be onsite and ready to travel at 1pm. No booking required.

We apologise for the late notice of this change and any inconvenience this may cause.

The previously advised dates and times of the further planned passages remain unchanged:

  • Thursday 14 September, 10am
  • Thursday 21 September, 10am
  • Thursday 28 September, 10am

The temporary bearings that are required in order for us to manually operate Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest canal will be installed week commencing Monday 4 September.

We will be offering an initial window of passage at 10am on Thursday 7 September to allow customers to travel through the bridge.

Our contractors and engineers will be onsite to operate the bridge to allow customers to pass, we would remind all customers wishing to pass through the bridge to be onsite and ready to travel at 10am. No booking required.

We will then be offering further windows of passage every Thursday at 10am throughout September, on the below dates, until the new permanent bearing housings have been fabricated and ready to be installed which have a 6-week lead time.

  • Thursday 14 September
  • Thursday 21 September
  • Thursday 28 September

Further repairs will be carried out between these planned passages, including works to the hydraulic rams.

A further update will be provided by Friday 29 September.

Following a further survey on Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal we have identified several issues that are making the bridge inoperable. Whilst we continue to liaise with our contractors who are making the replacement parts, which has an approximate lead time of 6 weeks, our specialist contractors will be onsite within the next 2 weeks to carry out remedial repairs which will enable us to operate the bridge under a controlled passage.

Notice of the passage and a further update on progress made will be provided by Friday 25 August.

This week, our teams have continued to work alongside our specialist contractors to investigate the issues and explore the possible repairs at Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal.

We have now come up with a method of repair which will enable us to resume navigation and our contractors are now sourcing the necessary parts. Due to the unique parts required, we are now waiting on a lead time of when we will be able to get the parts fabricated and to site. We anticipate we will have an update on this next week and a further update on progress made will be provided by Friday 18 August.

Please be advised navigation remains closed at Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal due to the failed bearings.

Due to the complex repair, and the unique structure this bridge will remain closed for several weeks. Our teams are continuing to investigate alongside our specialist contractors and explore all the methods of repair that are available.

A further update on progress made will be provided by Friday 11 August.

Whilst inspections continue in to the failed bearings at Bridge 24, Wood End Lift Bridge on the Peak Forest canal, we will be offering a window of passage at 2pm on Monday 31 July to allow customers to travel through the bridge.

Our contractors and engineers will be onsite to operate the bridge whilst boats are allowed to pass.

We would remind all customers wishing to pass through the bridge, to be ready and onsite at 2pm as this will be the only opportunity of passage during this closure; the bridge could remain closed for a several weeks whilst a method of repair is being investigated.

A further update will be provided by Friday 4 August.
