The water levels have now come down and the environment agency have opened the flood gates at Shardlow.Derwent Mouth Lock is also now open again and customers are safe to travel along the navigation. Please proceed with care.

Please be aware that due to the increase of flood water, the environment agency have had to close the flood gates at Shardlow and there is now no passage through Shardlow Lock.

Due to the navigation being completely in flood, boaters are asked not to travel from Aston Lock 3, down to Derwent Mouth Lock 1.

Canal & River Trust have padlock shut Derwent Mouth Lock 1, and the Upper Trent is still in flood. Therefore, the Trent & Mersey Canal cannot be accessed from the River Trent until further notice.

Can customers please make sure they shut all paddles and gates if they are moving too or from Stenson lock or Shardlow. If paddles or gates are left open this will impact on our flooding procedures and cause major issues for us and the Environment Agency.

The Environment Agency have just informed us that the flood gates are now open at Shardlow.

We will proceed to unchain the gates at Shardlow Lock allowing boaters to pass through.

However the River is still very much in flood with no passage through Derwent Mouth Lock 1 heading towards Sawley.

Further to our notice, boaters are asked not to use Shardlow Lock , as we are experiencing severe flooding at the moment in the area.

Shardlow flood gates are shut further down stream with no passage towards Derwent Mouth Lock 1.

In addition to the initial notice, please be aware that the gates at Lock 2, Shardlow Lock are also locked as part of the Environment Agency measures.

The notice has been updated to reflect the extended length of the navigation closure.

Description

Due to the recent rainfall, the Environment Agency have closed their Derwent Mouth flood gates near Shardlow. As part of this procedure the Canal & River Trust will also padlock shut Lock 1, Derwent Mouth Lock.

Therefore the Trent & Mersey Canal cannot be accessed from the River Trent until further notice.
