Steve is the former chief executive of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), a position he held for 14 years until the end of 2018. As chief executive of the WLGA, he developed strong connections across Welsh Government and brings an unrivalled understanding of Welsh Local Government, together with knowledge of the wide range of programmes and policies which will influence and impact the Trust's work in Wales. Steve has also held a number of voluntary roles which align with the work of the Trust in Wales, including chairing the Prince's Trust for Wales for five years.
Steve Thomas said: “This is an exciting role and I am pleased to be taking it up at such an important time for Glandŵr Cymru. Wales' canals are fantastic places and include the World Heritage site on the Llangollen Canal with the amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the unsurpassed Monmouth & Brecon Canal which I often walk along, and the exciting restoration projects on the Swansea and Montgomery canals. As an accessible and free-to-use outdoor blue-green space, Wales's waterways have an important role to play in bringing health and wellbeing for local people and visitors alike, and my role will be to promote their great potential and ensure they are recognised and supported.”
Richard Parry, chief executive at Canal & River Trust, said: “I am delighted that Steve is joining Glandŵr Cymru. Steve's in-depth understanding of the major political, social and economic opportunities and challenges across Wales, and his valuable contacts within both the government and voluntary sector will make a huge contribution to our work in Wales. Steve's experience will stand the Trust in good stead as we continue to develop our strategic plans for the waterways in Wales, and bring the benefits of being by the water to the communities they run through, the large number of visitors who come to enjoy them, as well as to boaters and other users.”

Mae Glandŵr Cymru, elusen dyfrffyrdd a llesiant - Yr Ymddiriedolaeth Camlesi ac Afonydd yng Nghymru - yn falch o gyhoeddi bod Steve Thomas, CBE wedi cael ei benodi'n gadeirydd bwrdd cynghori yr Ymddiriedolaeth yng Nghymru - Bwrdd Glandŵr Cymru.
Cyn brif weithredwr Cymdeithas Llywodraeth Leol Cymru yw Steve, a bu yn y swydd honno am 14 blynedd tan ddiwedd 2018. Datblygodd gysylltiadau cryf ym mhob rhan o Lywodraeth Cymru pan oedd yn brif weithredwr Cymdeithas Llywodraeth Leol Cymru, ac felly mae ganddo ddealltwriaeth heb ei ail o Lywodraeth Leol Cymru, ynghyd â gwybodaeth o'r ystod eang o raglenni a pholisïau a fydd yn cael effaith ac yn dylanwadu ar waith yr Ymddiriedolaeth yng Nghymru. Yn ogystal, mae Steve wedi gweithio'n wirfoddol mewn swyddi sy'n cyd-fynd â gwaith yr Ymddiriedolaeth yng Nghymru, gan gynnwys cadeirio The Prince's Trust - Cymru am bum mlynedd.
Dywedodd Steve Thomas: “Dyma swydd gyffrous ac rwy'n falch o ymgymryd â'r gwaith yn ystod cyfnod mor bwysig i Glandŵr Cymru. Mae camlesi Cymru'n llefydd gwych ac yn cynnwys Safle Treftadaeth y Byd yn Llangollen gydag ysblander Dyfrbont Pontcysyllte, Camlas unigryw Mynwy ac Aberhonddu y byddai'n cerdded ar ei hyd yn aml, a phrosiectau adfer cyffrous ar gamlesi Abertawe a Maldwyn. Mae gan ddyfrffyrdd Cymru rôl bwysig wrth ystyried iechyd a llesiant pobl leol yn ogystal ag ymwelwyr, am eu bod yn fannau awyr agored glaswyrdd sy'n rhad ac am ddim ac yn hawdd eu cyrraedd. Fy rôl i fydd hyrwyddo'u potensial mawr a sicrhau eu bod yn cael eu cydnabod a'u cefnogi.”
Dywedodd Richard Parry, prif weithredwr yr Ymddiriedolaeth Camlesi ac Afonydd: “Rwyf wrth fy modd bod Steve yn ymuno â Glandŵr Cymru. Bydd dealltwriaeth drylwyr Steve o'r prif gyfleoedd gwleidyddol, cymdeithasol, economaidd a'r heriau ledled Cymru, yn ogystal â'i gysylltiadau gwerthfawr o fewn y llywodraeth a'r sector gwirfoddol yn gwneud cyfraniad enfawr i'n gwaith yng Nghymru. Bydd profiad Steve yn sicrhau y bydd yr Ymddiriedolaeth mewn sefyllfa dda wrth i ni barhau i ddatblygu'n cynlluniau strategol ar gyfer dyfrffyrdd Cymru. Bydd hefyd yn dod â'r manteision o fod ger y dŵr i'r cymunedau gerllaw, y nifer fawr o ymwelwyr sy'n dod i'w mwynhau, yn ogystal ag i'r rheini sy'n defnyddio cychod a defnyddwyr eraill.”
