Survey work has started, with support from some of our local boating customers to establish which sections of the canal can be safely opened.

The first of these took place on Wednesday 20 January and following this we are now able to reopen the navigation between Sowerby Bridge and Salterhebble Locks. 

Once further surveys have been carried out we are hopeful that other sections of the canal will be able to safely reopen.

Further updates will be issued when information becomes available.

The navigation remains closed as there is significant silt build up and underwater obstructions.

Due to further rainfall and increased river levels we have been unable to get our maintenance craft on site to clear debris and undertake repairs. 

Further rain is forecast and levels are likely to remain high. 

Therefore the information previously published remains unchanged.

Please note that as well as the previous information issued the towpath between the Figure of Three Locks and Horbury Bridge Basin is also impassible until further notice.

The original notice and instructions issued 28th Dec remain unchanged. Please note the towpath at Elland Bridge has now been closed and will remain impassable for the immediate future.

Description

Due to extensive damage caused by recent extreme weather conditions all vessels are advised not to travel on the Calder and Hebble Navigation unless instructed by CRT staff.

There has also been extensive damage to the towpaths; extra care is required when using the towpaths, many towpaths are covered with silt and mud. The section of towpath between Cromwell and Elland is presently impassable.

CRT staff are on site making emergency repairs and assessing the situation. This notice will be updated 29th Dec at 15:30hrs
