Canal & River Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council have agreed a joint programme of works on the rock cutting, alongside the Shropshire Union Canal at Northgate, Chester, to enable the towpath to open as soon as possible.
Work will begin on Monday 4 February, initially to clear vegetation from the area which is being carried out by Canal & River Trust contractors and volunteers. Following a close inspection of the rock face loose rock will be then removed and made safe. The work is expected to take around two and half months.

Although we now understand the scale of the problem, we are still in talks with interested parties to determine responsibility for progressing any works.
Further updates will follow as known.

Due to ongoing investigations and for safety reasons the towpath will remain closed until further notice.

As part of an inspection of the Roman walls, an area of particularly loose material has been identified above the rock face at the back of the towpath. As a precautionary measure it is therefore necessary to close the towpath.
We will update this notice next week once we have had the opportunity to fully understand the scale of the problem.
Third party contractors will be removing vegetation and carrying out a survey of the city walls above the towpath. Access will be by abseiling.
Towpath users may need to wait for clearance to pass the site. Banks staff and warning signs will be in place.
Boat traffic should not be affected.
