Naburn Lock

Naburn Lock - York

Naburn, York, YO19 4RU.

Naburn Lock is on the River Ouse, six miles from York, and is seen by many as a hidden gem. It is a fairly compact site, but it offers a wealth of learning opportunities.

The original lock was built in the 1750s to improve navigation on this flood-prone river, and the work effectively created a small island. A larger lock was built in Victorian times and opened by Prince Albert. The site still has a range of buildings, including a fully-equipped forge, workshops, offices and two lock-keepers' cottages.
