Workshops

Our volunteers deliver workshops, talks, assemblies and more to inspire your pupils about canals and rivers, without leaving the classroom!

'Build a Canal' workshop

We offer several workshops, which can be delivered in person or virtually – all designed to engage and inspire your children. A great way to kickstart a new topic or consolidate learning. Children can prepare questions in advance to ask our experts!

Local History on Your Doorstep

Unearth the secrets of your local area through first hand-observation and historical enquiry. Find out about the people who helped to build the waterways.

Rivers

Helps children understand how rivers change from source to mouth, the relationship between rivers and settlements and how they are used for navigation.

Habitats: Walk on the Wild Side

Our waterways offer rich and varied habitats so spotting wildlife is guaranteed! Learn to identify and classify animals, where to find them and how the food chain works. Find out how people look after the waterways and how we protect the environment today.

Water Safety

Raise awareness of the hazards of being near water, how to avoid them and to learn what to do in an emergency. Can be delivered as interactive sessions in small groups or as an assembly.

Build a Canal

An immersive session to explore how and why canals were built and how they have shaped our local landscape. Children will dress up as characters and use a sandpit to construct their very own canal route.

All About Canals

An interactive presentation which reveals the wonders of our waterways.

Building Bridges

Have a go at building model canal bridges and find out why arches are such a good shape.

Floating and Sinking

This workshop will help children develop a clearer understanding of the factors affecting whether something sinks or floats.
