Storytelling

The story of 'The Day the Aliens came to the Tame Valley Canal' gives children the opportunity to develop spoken language and listening skills as well as providing a narrative springboard to the themes of physical and human geography. It doesn't matter if you're nowhere near the Tame Valley Canal - the resources can be used by everyone.

The sample KS2 Unit for Work offers an adaptable approach to the storytelling-themed content. It includes an animated short film and storybook (developed in collaboration with a Wednesbury-based school) along with activities and hands-on resources that will encourage children to connect and engage with their local area and wildlife.

In this learning bundle you will be able to:

  • Watch and read 'The Day the Aliens came to the Tame Valley Canal' to understand more about the canal environment.
  • Use all your senses by investigating your local canal area and creating a journey stick along the way.
  • Discover more about the impact of canals by comparing old and new photographs and maps.
  • Get creative by making and writing your own characters and canal inspired stories.
