Explorers Education Volunteer - Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
Activities: Explorer Education
Trevor, Llangollen Canal, Denbighshire
Due to the current situation with Coronavirus, we are not presently recruiting for this role.
If you love working with children and enjoy being outdoors join our team of education volunteers at the stunning Pontcysyllte Aqueduct World Heritage site and lead exciting and inspiring educational visits for primary schools and uniform groups. Education volunteers will lead sessions that extend from the classroom to the waterside, and include everything from explaining how canals were built to helping children to be safe by the water. Sessions will also include the wonderful wildlife, history and characters within the World Heritage Site.
We are looking for people who can volunteer flexibly and respond to school and informal group requests as required and who can commit to at least 3 or 4 days a month. We try and give you at least 2 weeks’ notice of a visit. Often several sessions will take place in one school or waterside location in a day normally from about 9am – 3.30pm.
What's in it for you?
This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a newly established creative team, work in a beautiful location, learn more about waterway heritage and wildlife, use your skills and learn new ones!
We'll provide you with resources and full training on how to lead groups of children. You'll also have the support of an education coordinator as well as the other volunteers in your team and we'll reimburse you for all travel costs.
What skills are we looking for?
For volunteers working with children we are looking for:
• Previous experience of working with young children
• The desire to work outdoors.
• The confidence to talk to, and lead workshops with groups of children.
• The ability to enthuse young people through talks and activities.
This role involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to volunteering with us.
