We are currently looking for volunteers to assist our skilled Manchester operations team with the day-to-day maintenance of the canals in our area. No two days are the same – there will be a variety of tasks such as water control, reactive works and lock maintenance.
The Manchester operations team maintain most of the Trust waterways in the Greater Manchester area. This includes four canals – Rochdale Canal (west), Huddersfield Narrow Canal (west), Ashton Canal, Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal – and seven reservoirs – Black Moss, Brunclough, Diggle, Elton, March Haigh, Redbrook and Swellands. The team is based at the Grove Road depot in Stalybridge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to care for the waterways in your area and be part of a supportive and friendly team of staff and volunteers. You can help make a difference in maintaining and enhancing the waterways in the Manchester area as well as benefiting your own physical and mental wellbeing. You will learn a host of new skills working alongside our operations team.
No experience is required, just bring yourself and a positive attitude. All tools will be provided as well as any necessary training. Please wear clothes that you do not mind getting messy and that are appropriate for the weather, as well as sturdy footwear (steel toe cap boots if possible).
If you are interested, please sign up for the opportunity below. You will then be contacted with more details of how you can get started.
