Wigan - Leeds & Liverpool
An opportunity for volunteers with civil engineering knowledge or an interest in this field to make a valuable contribution to the management of Trust infrastructure.
The Trust looks after a variety of structures (assets) including culverts, bridges, locks and many more. To predict the long-term condition of our infrastructure, we are calling for dedicated Asset Management Research Assistants to collect information and help complete our shiny, new Asset Condition Health Index.
You will be working alongside engineering specialists, collecting data on-site and interpreting and collating information from inspection reports using our asset archive, MS Excel and GIS (mapping software). This information will be used to complete the new asset models. There will also be opportunities to go on regular site inspections with our engineers to gain an holistic understanding of our asset management procedures.
This is a unique opportunity to enhance your career prospects within civil engineering, develop your software skills and make an important contribution to our understanding of Trust assets. You will develop an understanding of asset management and cutting-edge asset strategy approaches across a range of built structures. We are eager to tailor this opportunity to each volunteer’s individual interests within the varied field of civil engineering.
Students: beef up your CV with hard skills, experience and mentorship within an engineering field. Working and retired engineers: come and share your wisdom and make a lasting contribution to our UK waterways. PPE and out-of-pocket expenses will be covered by the Trust.
You will have knowledge or experience of civil engineering or be technically minded and able to demonstrate your interest in this field: students are welcome to apply. You will be proficient in data entry, comfortable with MS Excel and familiar with, or willing to learn how to use, GIS software. You will be willing and able to collect data across a range of assets along our inland waterway network; appropriate support will be provided. You will be diligent with an eye for detail and willing to make the most of this opportunity. Please get in touch if you are unsure if this volunteering role is right for you.
