various locations along the rivers Lee & Stort

Volunteer Towpath Rangers are part of the Canal & River Trust’s team working to manage the growth in popularity of walking and cycling on London’s towpaths. They are friendly faces who are happy to answer questions about the local area, how to stay safe on the towpath and above all encourage everyone to be courteous when using the waterways. They also encourage local residents and communities to get involved and volunteer with us to make a difference to the canals and rivers they care about.

As a Volunteer Towpath Ranger you will help make sure the towpaths are enjoyable place for everyone by being the Canal & River Trusts’ eyes and ears, attending and sometimes leading towpath events in your area, promoting the Share the Space, Drop your Pace campaign, carrying out visitor counts, managing towpath signage, leading some towpath walks and doing the odd spot of towpath gardening and maintenance too!

Benefits

This is the chance to have a positive impact on your local waterway; helping visitors and other local people to value and appreciate it. Volunteer Towpath Rangers will receive an induction and on-going training. Canal & River Trust will provide all the necessary clothing and equipment and will reimburse reasonable out of pocket expenses.

Skills required

We are looking for volunteers who live, work or travel through the London waterway, in particular the Rivers Lee & Stort

You don’t need any specialist knowledge to be a Volunteer Towpath Ranger, just enthusiasm for your local waterway, an interest in cycling and walking and patience to talk to all the people who’ll want to talk to you! Familiarity with email and social media would also be an advantage.

Volunteer Towpath Ranger events and activities may take place in the day time or evening and at weekends and could last from a couple of hours to a full day. Ideally you will be flexible in the time you can give and able to give up to a total of a couple of days a month.

If you feel you have the qualities we’re looking for to make a difference, and share our passion about the canal being enjoyed by everyone, we’d like to hear from you.
