Explorers Education volunteer - Saul Junction
Activities: Education, Explorer Education
Starts: 3 January 2022
Closing Date: 1 June 2022
Gloucester, Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, Gloucestershire
We are looking to establish a new team of Explorers education volunteers based at Saul Junction on the Gloucester & Sharpness canal. The volunteer role includes leading canal related workshops, guided walks and activities introducing classes of primary school children to the rich heritage and wildlife of the canal at Saul Junction. You will be making sure every aspect of a school visit runs smoothly from greeting the coach at the beginning of the day to waving goodbye at the end. There will also be opportunities to visit local schools to give water safety assemblies or classroom workshops and talks about the canal. The role particularly suits people with experience of working with children.
What's in it for you?
This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a newly established creative team. You will be involved with developing new resources for the site. The rewards will be knowing that you have contributed to a class of children having an enjoyable visit and ensuring we encourage the next generation to take an interest in our canals. You will have the support of an education officer and help from existing Explorers education volunteers and members of the Cotswold Canal Trust. All travel costs will be reimbursed.
What skills are we looking for?
Previous experience of working with young people in primary schools or other education settings.
Experience of delivering hands-on learning resources for children.
The ability to enthuse young people through talks and activities.
The ability to volunteer flexibly particularly during school term times.
This role involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not always a bar to volunteering with us.
