Restoration & repair works: Winter 2013/14

Millions of people enjoy our canals and rivers each year and if you’re one of them, whether you’re exploring by boat, bike or foot, you’ll see some of the finest examples of 200 year old working heritage in the country. We’re here to keep our unique structures in working order and so each winter we undertake a massive programme of maintenance work.

Open days An empty lock pound

During each winter works programme we hold a number of open days and this year is no exception. We're inviting you along to take a look behind the scenes and find out what it takes to keep the waterway network functioning.

Reflecting the breadth of the work we carry out, each open day offers a different experience and you could find yourself descending into drained locks, taking boat trips and even watching lock gates being craned in and out of the canal. We hold open days around the country so wherever you are there should be something nearby. While each open day varies due to the work being carried out, at all open days you’ll be able to chat to our engineers, ask questions and find out about the past of the area.

There’s really no better way to get a feel for the ingenious engineering and precise workmanship that went into making our canals all of those years ago.

If you're coming to one of our open days please remember to wear sensible shoes if you want to enter one of the lock chambers. All open days are weather dependent and could be subject to cancellations. Please check the website before setting off if there has been adverse weather.

If you can’t make any of our open day dates there’s no need to worry - you’re not going to miss out on all the fun. We've picked out our favourite repair sites, where we think something worth seeing is taking place and flagged them up on the map above.

We're putting up information boards next to our favourite repair sites to let you know what we're up to. Why don't you see how many you can visit this year?
