Following the successful repair of the culvert, the Rochdale Canal at Mytholmroyd has reopened to navigation. Note that the towpath will remain closed whilst the contractors demobilise and reinstate the site, which is expected to take a further week.

Work re-commenced after the Christmas break this week with the installation of temporary dams and pumps to create a dry working environment and removal of the temporary repair to uncover the failed section of culvert.

A permanent concrete repair will be carried out to the culvert over the next week and then new puddle clay will be laid over the top to ensure a watertight seal.

The contractors will then remove the temporary dams and pumps, refill the canal, reinstate the towpath, site compound area and rebuild the boundary wall.

Currently the work is expected to be completed and the canal re-opened by 24 January, however this is dependent on good weather and working conditions over the next few weeks.

Description

Further to yesterday's stoppage notice we can confirm that a culvert has failed beneath the Rochdale Canal between locks 6 and 7 in Mytholmroyd.  The canal will be closed to navigation in this area until further notice while we investigate, plan and then carry out the necessary repairs.

It is is too early to say how long the canal will be closed here but it is already obvious that this is going to be a complex task - the culvert has a strong flow of water in it from the stream that it carries and the site is surrounded by housing making access difficult.  We need to give careful thought to how best to approach this and it is likely to be a couple of weeks before we can be more definitive about a programme.

While the canal is closed at Mytholmroyd passages across the pennines on the Rochdale Canal will not be possible.  However, the canal is open either side up until after Christmas when the planned gate replacement work will start.

In the meantime, if you have any queries please contact us at Red Bull office for more information.
