Started volunteering with the Trust in February 2015, Welshpool Adoption Group meet every Thursday in the centre of Welshpool and carry out varied works along the adjacent stretch of the Montgomery Canal, from Abbey Lift Bridge to Belan Locks.
Main duties were to assist the Trust in management of the canal by undertaking monthly tasks undertaking veg management, painting, litter picking, minor repairs to boundaries, totems and other curtilage, waterborne activities and operation of Trust craft when agreed with the local supervisor and training completed.
The volunteers at Welshpool Adoption have adopted an old Trust workboat, Mantis. Mantis will be used as the volunteers' boat. She was originally a Trust work boat which had been sold with a view to working on the Mon and Brec Canal. However, it was felt that Mantis would not be appropriate for that canal and for the last 4 years she had been gradually sinking at Maedy Bridge on the Montgomery Canal. She has been generously donated to the Welshpool group and a small team of volunteers were able to raise Mantis and have spent the last few weeks bringing her back to life. She is now beautifully restored as can be seen in the photos.
We are currently using a borrowed outboard which is too small and are looking for sponsorship to buy a bigger engine.
They have managed to contribute over 2500 hours of volunteering during their time with the Trust.
