Friends of Slough Canal

We had been running regular annual big clean-ups and monthly mini clean-ups for some years, using tools and equipment provided by the Canal and River Trust. The Trust approached us about becoming an adoption group. We agreed and chose a stretch not covered by their contractors. We’ve been adopting our stretch of the Slough Arm for three or four years now.

We mainly focus on picking up litter but variety is always good. We’ve cut back overgrown vegetation and planted wildflowers. New volunteers are always welcome, so that we can do even more – Friends of Slough Canal Facebook page is a good way to keep in touch.

We know we’re making a difference. If the canal is looking clean, people will be less likely to drop litter.

The Slough Arm is surprisingly beautiful. Parts of it are close to really built up areas but it is a green corridor, which is quite rural for much of its length, with numerous photographic opportunities.

After our recent annual clean-up, one of our newest volunteers commented on how friendly everybody was, chatting and laughing while they worked.  Whatever we are doing, there is always a lovely atmosphere with the satisfaction of a job well done at the end.
